M: Mum, why can’t I see the clock tower clearly from here? I could see farther yesterday.

W: Are you sure? Let me have a look…

M: I just can’t see it clearly. There seems to be some kind of yellow fog in the air. It’s very windy, too.

W: That’s not fog. That is called a sandstorm. There is some sand and dust in the air when a sandstorm comes. The storm keeps people from seeing things clearly.

M: Oh, I see now. That’s why they warned people in Beijing not to go out without covering their faces today. But why do we have sandstorms, mum?

W: Oh, lots of reasons. But the loss in balance of nature and a long drought are two big ones.

M: Then what can people do about it?

W: We should protect the forests and plant more trees.

D.Listen to the passage and complete the following sentences (听短文,完成下列内容,每空格限填一词): (7)

In the past, when people had problems, they went to their families to get advice. Today it is possible to get advice from radio shows, TV programs and telephone hot lines, too. A telephone hot line is the easiest way of getting in touch with advisers. Callers don’t have to give their names and telephone numbers on most hot lines. Most hot lines are usually free, too. Callers do not have to pay for the advice to the phone calls-even if the calls are long distance. At some hot lines, the advisers are volunteers. Other hot lines pay their advisers for their work. About ninety percent of the advisers are professionals with years of education and experience, but sometimes, the advisers take a short class before starting to work on the hot line. All the advisers listen to people and help them settle their problems.

    VII. Writing(略)

A good book is a good friend. I’d like to introduce a good book Harry Potter to my cousin Tom.

Harry Potterisa series of seven fantasy novels written by British author J. K. Rowling. The book tells us the adventures of Harry Potter and his friends from the Hogwarts School. Although the characters are complex, we get attached to them easily and feel for their pain and happiness. What’s more, it makes people think what they should do for the people they love and what is really important in life.

My cousin Tom is a little boy who is crazy about magic tales and stories. Harry Potter can show him a fascinating world and inspire his imagination. The strong and lovely characters can help him build his own personality. I’m sure he can also learn about love and friendship from the book.

I do hope Tom will like the book and my recommendation can help him grow up quickly.
