一、需要带冠词的专有名词

冠词本身不能单独使用，也没有词义，它用在名词的前面，帮助指明名词的含义。英语中的冠词有三种，一种是定冠词，另一种是不定冠词，还有一种是零冠词。(1)普通名词或形容词构成的专有名词前要加定冠词the。例如：the United Nations 联合国the Summer Palace 颐和园the People's Hall 人民大会堂(2)由“普通名词+专有名词”或“专有名词+普通名词”构成的专有名词前要加定冠词the.例如：the Communist Party of China 中国共产党the New York Times 《纽约时报》the People'sRepublic of China 中华人民共和国(3)在江河、海洋、湖泊、山脉、运河、群岛、平原或沙漠等专有名词之前要加定冠词the。例如：the Yellow River 黄河the West Lake 西湖the Atlantic Ocean 大西洋the Xisha Islands 西沙群岛the North China Plain 华北平原the Himalayas 喜马拉雅山the Sahara Desert 撒哈拉沙漠(4)表示时代、朝代的专有名词前要加定冠词the。例如：the Tang Dynasty 唐代the Warring States Period 战国时期(5)在某些旅馆、建筑物的名词前要加定冠词the。例如：the Blue Sky Hotel 蓝天宾馆the Great Wall 长城the Museum of Chinese History中国历史博物馆Which of them is the better choice?—Well, it's hard to tell. 他们谁是更合适的人选?——嗯，这很难说。Some of the more time-consuming jobscannow be done by machines. 有些更费时间的工作现在可以用机器做了.He's got more money than the rest of us(put) together. 他的钱比我们大家的加在一起的总数还多。Fewer people write with their left handthan with their right. 用左手写字的人比用右手的少。Which of the two methods is the better? 这两种方法哪一种更好?Of the two possibilities, this is morelikely than that. 两个可能性中，后者比前者更可能。He's had a holiday and looks the better forit. 他度假之后，气色好多了。I love him all the more for his faults. 正因为他这些缺点，所以我越发爱他。The younger you are, the easier it is tolearn. 年纪越轻，学习越容易。The better I know her, the more I admireher. 我对她越了解，我就越爱慕她。The more money you make, the more youspend. 你挣的钱越多，花的钱也越多。He is by far the cleverer than her. 他比她聪明得多。It's quicker by far to go by train. 坐火车去要快得多。He is cleverer by far than her.It's by far the quicker to go by train.He's the best teacher even though he hasthe least experience. 他尽管经验最少，但教得最好。This dictionary is (the) best. 这本词典最好。Which of the boys is (the) strongest? 这些男孩子当中哪个力气最大?This dictionary is the best I could find. 这是我能找到的最好的词典。He was the strongest of all the students. 他是所有学生中最强壮的。I had a most unpleasant time at thedentist's. 我在牙医那里受了大罪。She is a most mysterious person. 她是一个非常神秘的人。It's safest to go by bus. 坐公共汽车去最安全。Vegetables are best when they are fresh. 蔬菜新鲜时最好吃。比较：He's busiest on Sunday. 他星期天最忙。(他与自己平时比)He's the busiest of all the people here. 他是这儿所有人当中最忙的。(他与别人比)He works hardest when he's doing somethingfor his family. 他为自己家做事时最卖力。比较：Of all the workers, he works (the) hardest.在所有工人中，他干活最卖力。第一点：序数词前通常要用定冠词

It’s the third time I’vebeenhere.这是我第三次来这儿。

The second is better than the first.第二个比第一个好。

【注意】

① 表示考试或比赛等的名次时，通常省略定冠词：

She was (the) third in the exam.她考试得了第三名。

②序数词用作副词时也通常不用冠词：

He came first. 他先来。

I’ll have to finish my homework first.我得先把作业做完。

③有些习语中的序数词前没有冠词：

at first 开始

at first sight 乍看起来

first of all 首先

④ 但若序数词前用了物主代词或名词所有格，则不能再用定冠词：

his second wife 他的第二个妻子;Tom’sthirdbook 汤姆的第三本书

第二点：序数词前有时可用不定冠词，表示次第在原有基础上的增加：

A second student stood up.又一个(第二个)学生站了起来。

I want to read the book a third time.这本书我想读第三次。

序数词前用定冠词和不定冠词的区别在于：定冠词表特指，不定冠词表泛指，有类似another的意思，但比another 的意思更明确。

比较：

I like the third girl.我喜欢第三个女孩。(至少有三个女孩供选择，特指)

I saw a third girl.我又看见了第三个女孩。(暗示原来已看见两个，这已是第三个)
