Although youprobably don’t realize you are doing it, you use your hands and the rest ofyour body every time you talk to someone. In many situations, what you say withyour eyes is more important than what comes out of your mouth. Eye contact isone of the most important forms of body language. It can be the key tosuccessful communication. It can show whether a person is friendly orunfriendly, interested or bored, clear or confused. However, eye contact canmean different things in different cultures. In Western cultures, making eyecontact in conversations is necessary. As a matter of fact, a Westerner mightconsider a lack of eye contact as a lack of interest.

　　People all over the world used the sun andthe moon to measure time. However, they all had different numbers of days in aweek and different numbers of hours in a day. In 1584, one of the scientistsstarted to think about a set of measures which used the number ten, but no onewas interested in his ideas. About two hundred years later, many scientistsdecided to use metres to measure length and they worked out how long a metreshould be.
