Students across China, studying in the fields of engineering, science and technology, are developing a lot of inventions. Here are three examples from the minds of China's young inventors.

      Foot Controlled Mouse

This new kind of mouse is controlled by the feet instead of the hands, to help disabled people when surfing the Internet.

The new invention is called a "surf mouse", and looks like a pair of blue slippers. When users press the slippers with their forefeet, they are clicking the left mouse button; when people press with their heels, they are clicking the right mouse; when they roll their feet over the slippers, they can surf Web pages.

      Dirty Water Filter

The "pump of life", a filter, can make dirty water drinkable. The pump is over 30 centimeters long. It has an in-pipe at the top and out-pipe at the end. There are two main parts: the drive zone to pump water and the material zone to eliminate harmful things. Rain fish tank water and coalmine water can all be cleaned in the material zone. The invention could be used for many kinds of disaster relief. The inventor of the filter told us that water was delivered by helicopters to Wenchuan in 2008. If the water-purifying equipment had been sent instead, people could have had more water faster after the earthquake.

      Transformer Vehicle

The multi-functional vehicle is named Tranfus. By changing the breadth (宽度) of tires and the structure of a car, it can become a motorbike or a luggage carrier. The name Tranfus is a short form of "transforming for us".

Traffic jams can make a driver go crazy. The Tranfus can change into a luggage carrier, and users could walk with it. When started, the roof transforms, turning into a motorbike. But its inventor doesn't think Tranfus will be on the market soon as some auto companies like it, but none are willing to invest.

      74. The Foot-controlled Mouse is used to help ___________.

      A) left-handed students      B) right-handed students

      C) young inventors       D) disabled people

      75. Users surf Web pages with the Foot-Controlled Mouse by _____________.

      A) pressing the slippers with their forefeet  B) pressing with their heels

      C) rolling their feet over the slippers   D) raising their forefeet

      76. The underlined word "eliminate" in the passage properly means __________.

      A) run out of   B) get rid of   C) take hold of  D) look out of

      77. A car can become a motorbike or a luggage carrier if we change______________.

      A) different kinds of batteries     B) the height of the roof

      C) different orders in the keyboard    D) the breadth of tires and the structure of it

      78. Why CAN'T the Transformer Vehicle be on the market soon?

      A) It is only a crazy idea and has no scientific theory to support it.

      B) It is too small to be a car and too big to be a luggage carrier.

      C) There are no auto companies offering to invest it.

      D) There are no auto companies showing interest in it.

      79. The best title for the passage is ___________________.

      A) Young Inventors' Latest Concepts    B) Ideal Vehicles for the Future

      C) Engineering Experiments      D) Market Developing

According to experts, the word Hutong originated from Mongolian language meaning "Well"(井). In ancient times, people tended to gather and live around wells. So the original meaning of Hutong should be a place where people gather and live. But Hutong first a   86      in Beijing during the Yuan Dynasty. The old city was completely destroyed during the war. So they had to rebuild it. First, they had to find a center, and then built a r   87   square city. At that time, there was a clear definition for "Avenue, Street and Hutong". A 37-meter-wide road was called an avenue, an 18-meter-wide one was called a street, and a 9-meter-wide lane was called a Hutong. Most of today's Hutongs were formed during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Nobody knows e   88   how many Hutongs there are in nowadays Beijing. But if we connected all the Hutongs together, their total l   89  would even be longer than the famous Great Wall, which is about 4,000 miles.

Today you can find v   90   Hutongs with different shapes, sizes or directions. The shortest one is only 40 centimeters wide. And some Hutongs have more than 20 turns.

As we walk t   91   the Hutongs, you may find most of them look almost the same with gray-colored walls and bricks. Actually inside those walls are the courtyard houses, where people live. In Chinese we call them 'Siheyuan". "Si" literally means four; "he" means to surround and "yuan" refers to the courtyard. So a rectangular wall enclosing four houses, one built on each side facing into the center, is called a Siheyuan. When they were first built, usually one Siheyuan was   o  92   by only one family. And nowadays, with the growth of the population, most Siheyuans are shared by 4 to

      D. Answer the questions(根据短文内容回答下列问题): ( 12分)

Boys do best with "as few girls as possible" in English lessons at primary and secondary school, Steven, a research student at Bristol University, told the Royal Economic Society's conference. But when it comes to math and science, both boys and girls at primary schools achieve up to tenth of a grade more when there is a high proportion (比例) of girls in the class, Steven found.

Steven studied boys' and girls' test results at the ages of 7, 11, 14 and 16 in 16,000 schools in England between 2002 and 2004 for his Ph.D. He analyzed the test scores to see whether the proportion of girls in a year group make a difference to the results of both genders (性别) in math, science and English.

Boys often get to a tenth of a grade worse when they study English with high numbers of girls as opposed to few or no girls, Steven found. The more girls there are in an English class, the worse boys perform. This is particularly the case in primary schools, he discovered.

Steven's results show boys should be taught English in single-sex classes. Girls, who outperform boys in English at every stage at school, are unaffected by the number of boys in their English classes. He said, "The results say that boys would benefit at all ages from being taught English with as small a proportion of girls as possible. In math and science, the results tend to show that both boys and girls benefit from having more girls in the classroom. A mix of the genders in both science and math is the best."

Steven said boys may do worse in English when there is a high proportion of girls in their class because they realized that the girls are better than them. It could also be that teachers use teaching styles more appropriate to girls when there are more girls than boys in the class. Both genders perform better in math and science at primary school when there are more girls in the class because boys tend to break the class rules.

      93. Will boys do better in English if there are few girls in their class?

      94. Which age groups did Steven study boys' and girls' test results?

      95. What did Steven suggest teaching English to boys at school?

      96. What is the best classroom teaching style in math and science?

      97. Why do boys do worse in English when there are more girls in class?

      98. Do you agree that girls can always do better in study? Why or Why not?

      Ⅶ. Writing (作文): (共20分)

      99. Write a passage of at least 60 words on the topic "The View out of the Window". ( 以"窗外的风景"为题写一篇不少于60个词的短文,标点符号不占格。)
